Lawn Care Services | Outdoor Pest Control | Chinch Bug Control
Do you have irregular yellow patches in your grass that keep spreading? Don’t kid yourself, you may have chinch bugs and they will eat your lawn up. The cause is most likely due to Chinch Bugs. They can be the leading lawn damaging pest on Florida’s Treasure Coast. This tiny pest, barely measuring over 6 mm in length, causes millions of dollars in damage annually. The southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis , is the second most expensive plant feeding arthropod in Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Palm City, Vero Beach, and Jupiter.
The summer months are when the Chinch Bugs thrive most. They favor warm and damp weather, typically July is when the
infestations peak. Many residents in Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Martin county have trouble determining whether they have an infestation or not. The chinch bugs are small creatures and can usually only be noticed if searching near the roots of the grass. A good tip of learning if you have Chinch Bugs is to remove both ends of a tin can. Soften the soil a little with water, and insert one end of the can into the ground at least 2-3 inches deep, leaving at least 4 inches of the can above the ground. Fill the can with water and wait about five minutes. If chinch bugs are present, they will float to the surface of the water.
The damage in Port St. Lucie, Stuart, Jupiter, Vero Beach, and Palm City areas can be costly to residents. The chinch bug inserts its straw-like mouth parts into the plant tissue and sucks out the plant juices while injecting chemicals into the plant which clog the vascular system of the plant. The region around the feeding puncture usually turns yellow. Damaged areas first appear as small, uneven patches which grow as the insects spread. Most of the damage to your lawn will be in sunny areas, the sun attracts them. The southern chinch bug is known to still stay active during mild winters in South Florida. They will survive off the roots of grass. They do not need to leave their feeding ground, and spring infestations often begin where the chinch bug stopped the preceding season. Adult Chinch Bugs are winged, between April and May, they will fly to new areas and begin to breed and populate other portions of the neighborhood.
At the mark of spring in South Florida, the female adult Chinch Bugs will
come out to lay eggs. They average 15-20 eggs a day for an average time of 2-3 weeks only. After laying the eggs, it takes approximately 1-2 weeks to hatch. Baby Chinch Bugs begin immediately on sucking the grass juices causing damage. The newborns reach adulthood in 30-90 days. There can be up to 2 generations a year, possibly 3 if we experience unusually warm summers.
